HONEY! I SHRANK THE ZOO... The effects of value engineering
THE END
The overall concept of the architecture of the New Zoo evolved because of the value engineering exercise. Originally, the project was introduced as having the"Coastal California" look. The highly decorated Arts & Crafts buildings were studied and desired. It was thought that the history of craft in the Bay Area could be integrated with the animal and plant concept to create an interpretive expression at the Zoo Street. Field Paoli was particularly interested in looking at a lot of Julia Morgan's work in California. However, as the project evolved, the value engineering exercise forced Field Paoli to rethink the concept of "Coastal California." Rather than Arts & Crafts, the project focused on simplier building masses, roof lines, and structure. The final building design took on a "barn-look" similar to the buildings in Bolinas and Sea Ranch.
