Bringing Light & Equipment into the Basement

The Sub-Basement Waiting Room is more than a floor below grade. Relatives in the waiting room can wait for hours as their loved ones undergo radiation therapy. Connection to daylight and an aquarium make this space more enjoyable. Shifts in daylight are used as a gentle distraction to pacify people in the space. A connection to the outdoors is framed through the funnel that goes up to the "beacon" at the front of the building.

As well as spreading out daylight, the fabric hides the equipment access "lift out slab." The small lift- out slab at the front of the building is an indication of the site constraints at Mount Zion. The slab can be removed to access or move-in heavy equipment in the sub-basement levels.
