Artwork
A Workshop was held on January 27, 1999 on the topic of incorporating artwork into the building.
Both people from UCSF/Stanford and SMP/SHG (SmithGroup) were present. The incorporation of artwork into the interior design of the building was part of the effort to relieve patients of their anxieties. The kinds of artwork that were discussed at this meeting included:
- The Quilt Show, which features 12 quilts made by patients and staff of UCSF under the "Art for Recovery" project.
- Artwork by Patients and Staff, paintings/drawings/collage pieces hung in groups.
- Memorabilia commemorating Mount Zion Hospital's Jewish Tradition
- Historical documents/artwork recognizing the neighborhood
- Art Integrated with Architecture: art
glass in the main vestibule, casework in the main lobby, "Healing Fountain" in the main lobby,
and "Starry Sky in the Linac Rooms are a few examples.
- Some other ideas included a "river" starting in the quiet room going through the lobby to the main entrance
- Embedding objects in the floor during construction (like findings from an archaeological dig)
- Using landscaping on the 5th floor terrace.
- Translucent Glass in Opening between Atrium and Hospital
- Quiet Room (Meditation Room, by the lobby):
Soothing sounds of water, quotes of history etched in floor.
