The 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s saw a commitment to teaching and research by the hospital. In the early 30’s, they expanded their mission to include both of these tasks, and made it official in the late 30’s when they drafted a new charter for the organization. During this time, they established a connection with the University of California and created laboratories for the hospital. These steps, along with some others, allowed the hospital’s services to grow exponentially in the following two decades. A cardiovascular research center opened along with a tumor institute and a neurology institute. Open heart surgery, home care for the elderly, long term care programs, and occupational therapy all became part of the services available thru the hospital. |
