The
Client's Executor and Civic Conscience
The McCall Design Group found itself in a dual role,
as agent of the client as well as advocate for the neighborhood. Acting
in this capacity, the firm found itself trying to voice and address
the concerns of both parties. The client's concerns, as is typical,
revolved around realizing their standard store identity and brand image
on the given site. The neighborhood's desires primarily revolved around
reducing the scale of the store's massing and facade, including a civic
element that responded to Harvey Milk Plaza, and, given the possibility
that a single tenant store was an inevitability, creating a progressive
Pottery Barn that truly appeared to be of the neighborhood and community.

Pacific
Construction
Point person
After submitting their bid, Pacific Construction was
chosen amongst a short list of 3 general contractors, largely due to
cost considerations. As part of WSI’s typical construction process,
the various nationally contracted subcontractors and suppliers submit
their shop drawings and material specifications directly to McCall Design
who contacts and communicates with the subcontractors directly.
Pacific Construction is
a 25 year old northern Californian construction company specializing
in retail and hospitality construction. This project was their fourth
project with Williams-Sonoma, with their prior experience being a series
of smaller in-mall Pottery Barns located in southern California. Their
role is primarily managerial, with 1 project manager and 1 on-site superintendent
forming their project team to oversee subcontractor efforts and coordinate
weekly job meetings between client, architect and subcontractors.
