Loma Prieta

October 17, 1989, at 5:04:15 pm........6.9 magnitude earthquake.......epicenter was located at 37.04° N. latitude, 121.88° W. longitude near Loma Prieta peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains, approximately 60 miles south-southeast of San Francisco.

The Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 was not forgiving to the Berkeley High School campus.  At final count the damage was:

  • Building A would ultimately be condemned and demolished.

  • Building B, C, and the Community Theater sustained minor damage that was repaired.

  • The Gymnasium was not damaged significantly in Loma Prieta, but recent structural analysis indicates that it might not survive the next Big One.

  • The Science and Shop Buildings received a major renovation in 1993 partially attributed to seismic upgrades.

With the condemnation of Building A, the school found itself without campus dining facilities and administrative offices.  While the administrative offices were dispersed and housed in various locations throughout the campus and in trailers, the school has been without dining facilities ever since.
