DESIGN:  Foundations of Design

It is Time to Hire an Architect
Berkeley Unified School District recognizes the extent of construction needed on many schools throughout the district and decides to take action.  A competition is held to choose a board of six architectural firms to divide all projects amongst.  How did ELS get the commission for Berkeley High School when they were not chosen as one of the six firms?

The Client, the Design, and the Napkin
The superintendent of Berkeley Unified School District, Jack McLaughlin, sketched his vision of how the school should be organized on small napkins.  From these sketches, a school was conceived.  How does McLaughlin's sketches tie into the Gutterson and Corlett Master Plan?

Continuities and Discontinuities
One of Berkeley Unified School District's main design goals was to maintain unity within the campus.  While not wanting to design a historical recreation, ELS drew material, rhythm and design elements from adjacent buildings.  What are these elements and how were they incorporated into the new design?
