CHANGE: Hitting a Moving Target
Minor
Adjustments
Because of its long duration of project life, minor adjustments had to
be made in order to fulfill the changing conditions of school.
Many considerations were given even to minor changes which the
architects kept in mind throughout the design process. No matter how small the ideas may be, they were all vital to the
ultimate outcome of
the design because all these different considerations shaped and altered
the final design. So what
were these minor adjustments that took place?
Fate of
Building B
Apparently,
different ideas and changes evolved during design development which
indicate just how complex the design process can be and the importance of
flexibility in developing ideas to implement unexpected changes.
Among these unforeseen changes in
context, there was one major incident involving Building B which
unintentionally boosted the opportunity in returning to the Master Plan
of 1937. So
what happened to Building B?

Design Revision
Due to the incident involving Building B, a major design change had
to be implemented after the construction had begun. ELS architects
explored different options before coming to a final decision. So
what were these design changes?
New
Courtyard
Without the Building B in its place, a new plan had to be developed
which took the Berkeley High School closer to the Master Plan of 1937
thus completing the cycle. What
was done with the area where it used to stand?
