The Role of BRIDGE Housing

BRIDGE housing was elected as the master developer of the projects. This was significant because it allowed BRIDGE to create better coordination among the team.

Background on BRIDGE

In 1981, the San Francisco Foundation received an anonymous gift of $660,000 to address the housing crisis in the Bay Area. The foundation worked closely with the Bay Area Council, a group of 300 of the region's largest corporations, in order to form BRIDGE as a non-profit, regional development corporation. BRIDGE devoted its effort towards the production of large volumes of high-quality homes targeted primarily to families earning $18,000 to $35,000 annually.

Since 1983, BRIDGE has developed over 9,500 homes throughout California. Over $16 million in donations has been added to the initial anonymous gift. Now BRIDGE is the largest non-profit affordable housing developer in California. In the words of their founding president, Donald Terner, "Shelter is one of the basic necessitites of life and there is no substitute for it."

The goal of BRIDGE is not to develop housing, but to create sustainable living environments that enhance and uplift the neighborhoods around them.
